For immediate release                                                                             MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2013

HARTFORD – The Office of the Attorney General and the state Department of Consumer Protection today issued a joint statement on the ongoing joint investigation into Hartford’s Doc Hurley Scholarship Foundation:

“Contrary to reported statements, Muriel Hurley-Carter has not worked with our offices to resolve debts owed to the Hartford Public Schools for past years’ Doc Hurley Scholarship Foundation high school basketball tournaments. We have seen no evidence of payments of those debts and, as of this time, have received no confirmation from the City of Hartford that it is permitting this year’s tournament to go forward. The tournament has been advertised to take place at Weaver High School from December 19 to 21. We urge participating high schools or others with questions about the tournament to contact Hartford Public Schools to obtain information and determine if the tournament will go forward.

“Our focus will continue to be on evaluating if funds raised in the past have been handled appropriately, and to ensure that any remaining funds – or future funds, if the tournament or other fundraising efforts go forward – are directed to their intended charitable purpose.”
